About Andrew Tischler
Born in 1983 in Kerrville, Texas, Andrew Tischler grew up in an environment where creative expression was naturally encouraged. Raised by his father, Tom Tischler, a professional sculptor, art was a fundamental part of his daily life from the very beginning. Andrew gravitated toward two-dimensional media early on, showing a strong focus that led to his first commercial illustration commissions while he was still in school.
“I was a very driven kid, completely focused on art. I spent a lot of time outdoors observing nature, trying to understand the details of the world around me. My main goal back then was simply to draw and paint what I saw, trying to make it look as true to life as possible on the page.”
After finishing high school, Andrew moved to Perth, Western Australia, where he earned a degree in fine art at university. Because the curriculum leaned heavily toward contemporary art styles, it ran counter to his desire to learn traditional realism. Following graduation, he dedicated several years to an independent study of traditional techniques, leaning into the methods of the old masters. He began traveling across Australia’s vast landscapes to translate the terrain into oil paintings, gradually building a dedicated following in the Western Australian art scene through a series of successful exhibitions and international commissions.
Andrew had previously spent time living in Wellington as a young boy, and he eventually returned to New Zealand alongside his Kiwi wife, Rachel. The dramatic shift in scenery had an immediate impact on his creative practice. Inspired by the scale and unique atmosphere of the country’s wilderness, he began working on much larger canvases, further developing his approach to rendering light and texture.
Over time, Andrew discovered a passion for art education and began sharing his studio processes online. His YouTube channel eventually grew to over 600,000 subscribers, connecting him with a global community of more than 1.2 million art enthusiasts. Today, he continues to support aspiring realists worldwide, teaching over 5,000 students through his online art school, Tisch Academy.
“I paint for people. My work isn’t overly complicated, and you don’t need a formal art background to engage with it. I believe art should be accessible, requiring nothing more from the viewer than a moment of their time. For me, the ultimate goal is to create immersive environments that you feel you could step right into, providing a quiet space of respite from a busy world.”
Andrew now lives in Northlake, Wānaka, with Rachel and their five-year-old son, Hugo. His flagship space, Tischler & Co Fine Art, combines his working studio with a public gallery. It serves as a creative hub for the local community, continually evolving as new paintings are produced at the easel and shared directly from the gallery walls.
